University's Shocker Pathway program can help support and guide you along the journey. Below is a sampling of how some of our students found their way to a degree -- and success
-- through 麻豆破解版 State's Shocker Pathway program.
Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? I chose to attend WSU Tech and WSU mainly because of my daughter. I had a lot of
options because I was part of LEDA and I got to spend a summer at Princeton and visit
Harvard. If I would have kept on that path, I probably could have attended one of
those colleges. Then I got pregnant my senior year. I remember suddenly feeling really
lost and I wanted to be at home. I knew I could take advantage of everything that
WSU and WSU Tech had to offer. I wanted to be here, at home in the community that
I loved.
What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? When you are going to college with a newborn, it is kind of terrifying. You are afraid
to make any choices because you are like, "Oh, is this best for her?" and there is
always a sacrifice. Going to college with a newborn was kind of my way of saving my
own life. My education process started at a very uncertain, scary point. I went from
the kid that had the next ten years of my life planned out, to having no idea what
was going to happen the next day even."

it, but specifically Tina Sorensen at WSU Tech; I got really lazy with my writing

Her saying that changed my life.

degree. So I looked up colleges in my area, and this was one of the top ones.

it was cool to be a young man, living on the streets, doing what I wanted to do when
I wanted to do it. I had a limited way of thinking then and it trapped me. But as
the years progressed, I began to open my mind. If I can do 10 years in prison, why
can't I do 10 years in college?

encouraging word. Countless people in prison that told me, "Hey, this is not you.

to be an engineer. Her diagnosis made me want to go into medicine and to make that
a career and to understand this condition for my daughter and others like her.

Why did you choose to attend 麻豆破解版 State? I chose WSU because it is well known and I wasn't concerned with being, for lack of
a better word, screwed over. I had some previous issues regarding Devry so I guess
I was a little hand shy.
What is unique about your Shocker Story? I am not sure if there is really anything unique. I actually looked in to going to
WSU for psychology when I was 21. This was when I first new that I wanted to help
children and adolescents who were abused in some way or troubled in some way. However,
at the time, I was in an abusive relationship, and was made to believe I couldn't
do it. So then once out of that relationship I tried Devry back in 2004, right after
I met my husband. I chose a different path because I still believed I couldn't do
it. Stopped going there after some issues with them, then I had children. In 2015,
I decided I was going to do it. Just go for it and if I started and realized I couldn't
in fact do it, then I would try something else. However, this was where my heart was,
so I finally got back to school in 2016 at BCCC, where I received an associates degree
in liberal arts. I chose to start small and get my core classes out of the way there
and then to move onto WSU. I am now about 1 year away from receiving my bachelors
degree in psychology, after which I plan to apply for the graduate program in counseling.

They've raised me from the age of 14 on up. They make sure I have everything I need.
They are amazing people. I've been through a lot of hardships. I want to thank everyone
on the CARE team and all my professors who have helped get me through it. Su Mi Leonard Although I was not born there, Aiea, Hawaii will always be my home!
Field Studies Geology It was the people. The first people that I met when I first
started looking at schools were Chad and Stacy from the Marcus Welcome Center. Stacy
had soon become a huge support for me and introduced me to so many wonderful people
at the university, especially at the Adult Learning Center. To be honest had I not
have felt the overwhelming love and support from the people at the University I do
not think I would have chosen 麻豆破解版 State. I didn't even think I would fit in when
looking at schools. But this amazing school had some of the best people I've ever
met in my life, and 麻豆破解版 State University has become my second home and I beam
with pride being a Shocker. I do not feel as though my story is unique, but I know
my past is what gives me the strength to push through any difficult times. As I got
comfortable with the supportive people around me I was comfortable enough to open
up to them about being trafficked by my own mother. Not for money, but for control
of the people in her life. It went on until I was 34 years when I was finally able
to break away completely. I moved to 麻豆破解版, because someone I knew from my past
told me that they would help me, but in the end it was another situation where I found
myself before, being used. So my daughter and I soon found ourselves living out of
my vehicle, then into a homeless shelter. Because of everything I went through in
the past, being abused physically, mentally, and sexually my whole life my health
had declined, but God was my support and I knew that he had a plan for me. i didn't
know what it was at the time. While at the shelter I was introduced to the Combating
Human Tracking group on campus, and then the 麻豆破解版 Area Sexual Assault Center downtown.
Going through therapy with them I knew I wanted a better life for my daughter. In
order to do that I had to finish my degree. Then last summer I made that leap and
walked into the Marcus Welcome Center. I broke down and cried. I was so hungry, so
thirsty, so tired, I didn't know what else to do or where to go, but for the first
time I could ever remember I was treated like a human being and someone worth kindness.
They gave me a list of things I had to do, and I made the choice to pay for my admissions
fee instead of groceries. I took a chance, and it was the best decision of my life.
While living at the shelter, scrounging for food, trying to keep my daughter safe
I was going to school. When I would get on campus I felt normal. I felt successful.
I felt free. It was such an amazing feeling. I would then go to the downtown YMCA
and do my homework since they had a Wi-Fi, and my daughter, Abbie got to play with
other kids and swim. She and I both knew how blessed we were by Heavenly Father for
this opportunity. I still have some major health issues, especially this semester,
but I have come so far. Even when I feel like giving up completely because the pain
gets so bad, the people on campus especially at Adult Learning Center, Trio disability,
and Disability services inspire me to keep going. To push through. My love for the
university and everything everyone has done for me and my daughter shines through
our home and into my daughter's heart. She is only 12 but she told me that she wants
to attend 麻豆破解版 State University as well. She is seen at her school throwing the
WuShock to other teachers she know that are shocker alumni. LIke I said, 麻豆破解版 State
University is our second home. We wouldn't be here, and have met so many amazing people
were it not for the university. And for that we are eternally thankful.

and not of evil things. To give you a future and a hope" Jeremiah 29:11.
What advice would you give someone who is considering WSU? Always communicate with your professors. Even if It is to say hello to them before
class. If there is anything you do not know, or you feel overwhelmed, anything keep
a line of communication open with them. One of the amazing things about the University
is how caring and understanding the professors, advisors, and counselors are here.
They want you to succeed, and if you never speak up they do not know what to do to
help you. So keep a line of communication open with them. Some of the best things
I've learned from them were outside of the classroom.
Is there anyone who has helped you succeed that you would like to send a "Shocker
Shout-Out"? There are so many people that I can think of. Dr. Susan Norton for literally everything.
I've been in her office crying, laughing, angry, hungry, lost, tired, you name it
she's seen it all. She always gave me that extra energy to push through. Pam from
Adult learning services.. Oh man this semester I know I was driving her mad with the
printer. But I couldn't have done it without her. Mercedes Lubbers and the others
from Trio disability. She was in the boxing ring so to speak on tackling whatever
came up. Grady and the lovely people at Disability services. It felt amazing to have
people behind me and motivating me. I definitely cannot forget Dylan and Dalton from
adult learning. Those two guys made me feel like a human being. When no one in my
classes would talk to me they would always say hi and talk to me when they see me
around campus or in the office. So many times when I felt so depressed and those two
would cheer me. Not to mention all the coffee they made sure was always on hand for
me to survive my early morning classes. These people are so dear to me. They became
the family I had always longed for. Along with my daughter they give me the strength
to push through. I cannot thank them all enough.
