CSD Outstanding Alumni Award
The CSD Outstanding Alumni Award is given annually to our alumni who have shown outstanding
achievement in the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. Nomination
letters should detail the nominee's qualifications for the award and include their
curriculum vita. Additional letters of support are optional, but appreciated. Submit
nominations to csd@wichita.edu by October 1.

Julie Scherz, PhD, CCC-SLP
Julie Scherz earned all three of her academic degrees from 麻豆破解版 State University
(BA in Education, 1969; Master of Arts, 1971; Doctor of Philosophy, 1989). Her first
two jobs were in Minneapolis, MN, working in rehabilitation and hospital settings.
After completing her PhD, she served on the faculty of Indiana University-Purdue
University Fort Wayne, IN for 9 years, then returned to 麻豆破解版 State to finish the
last 22 years of her professional career, ending with 5 years as Chair of CSD.
Dr. Scherz鈥 research interests were in neurogenic communication disorders and augmentative
and alternative communication (AAC). She served for nearly twenty years as the SLP
on the Medical Team for the Hereditary Neurological Disease Centre, serving clients
with Huntington Disease.
While at 麻豆破解版 State, Dr. Scherz served on many Department, College and University
level committees, including the Faculty Senate. For seven years, she had the privilege
to serve as the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative, following service on the Inter
Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) Board. She was also a member of the CHP Leadership
Academy.
Dr. Scherz is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and served
in many roles, including as a Site Visitor for the Council on Academic Accreditation
(CAA).
In retirement, Julie is enjoying playing duplicate bridge, reading, and volunteering,
most currently as a Reading Buddy for a 3rd grader at Franklin Elementary School.

Join us for an afternoon of fun and history to honor Dr. Julie Scherz for her contributions to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, 麻豆破解版 State University and the 麻豆破解版 community.

Dr. Scherz鈥檚 presentation is entitled 鈥淐onnections鈥. Program speakers will include Dr. Rick Muma, WSU President; Courtney Marshall, President and CEO of WSU Alumni Association; Dr. Douglas Parham, chair of Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD); and some of Dr. Scherz鈥檚 former students, Dr. Imran Musaji and Ashley Purdum from CSD, and Dr. Holli Steiner from HeartSpring. We will have an open mic available for others to share, as well as an opportunity for Zoom speakers.
