1. Join our student organization
Current WSU Students, alumni, and community members are welcome to participate in our registered student organization. Student organization members lead teams to build cars each semester, plan delivery events, conduct community outreach, and coordinate local fundraising events. to become an official member.
2. Sign up to participate each semester
We conduct build sessions each fall semester and each spring semester. Summer builds are reserved for high school summer camps or other community builds and will not involve current WSU students seeking service learning credit; there are no summer opportunities for service learning credit in GoBabyGo. Each semester we have a sign up form for participants to complete to tell us their schedule and preferences; this must be completed to participate. Returning participants receive preference to participate as they become experienced builders and team leaders to help train our new participants. 3. Applied learning credit
The GBG project includes approximately 40 hours each semester:
- 2 hours of meeting with the child and their family and their professional physical therapist (one meeting at the beginning and one at the end)
- 5 hours of design research for car and materials
- 3 hours managing a budget, cost analysis, and project management
- 20 hours of direct build time on the car
- 9 hours writing a detailed assembly manual
- 1 hour writing two reflection papers (see paragraph below for Engineering+ service learning)
- Hours my vary by specific project and complexity of modifications
Physical therapy majors will receive credit towards graduation, provided they have a GoBabyGo leader sign off on their form.
Engineering majors will fulfill the Engineering+ Service Learning credit towards graduation. The official requirement to earn service learning credit, outside of a credit-bearing course, is to 鈥渃omplete a total of 40 hours of volunteer service on a project that uses engineering or computer science skillsets and serves a community need.鈥 In addition, a template will be provided for two (2) required reflection papers: one written at the beginning of the project and one afterwards. To earn this Engineering+ service learning credit, complete the following:
- Email Samantha Corcoran at the beginning of the semester for approval
- Active participation in 40-hours of work in the program (attendance taken)
- Write two (2) reflection papers on your experience
- Submit papers by the last day of classes for grading and final approval
