1) What is first-generation?

First-generation means that neither parent has received a baccalaureate (4-year) college degree.

2) I am currently enrolled in an undergraduate program or I have an associate (2-year) degree; is my child still eligible?

Yes, as long as neither parent has attained a baccalaureate degree at the time the application is received, the applying student is still considered first-generation and will be eligible for program services throughout their high school career.

3) My child would be a first-generation college student, but we don't meet the income guidelines. Would he/she still qualify?

Two-thirds of students we serve must be low income, so if we鈥檝e not hit that benchmark, then your child would be eligible provided we can demonstrate they are at high academic risk.

4) How much does it cost to participate in the CUB program?

It鈥檚 free. All services are provided completely free of charge! In fact, students will receive small stipends for their participation in the program.

5) My grades aren't very good / GPA is not very high, am I still eligible?

If you鈥檙e an incoming Freshman and have not performed well in middle school, then you would be placed on academic probation for your freshman year.  If you鈥檙e unable to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 the student would be terminated.

If the student is an incoming Sophomore or Junior and their cumulative GPA is below 2.0, they would need to bring their GPA up to 2.0 before admittance to program.

6) What about transportation?

During COVID-19 restrictions, we are suspending providing any ground transportation.  Before dropping off CUB students, CUB students will administer COVID screening checklist and take students temperature, while they are in car.  If the students fail any question or has a high temperature, they will be unable to participate in on campus activity.

Parents are responsible for making sure their children are getting to the program. For example:

  • During the academic year, students will be expected to attend Saturday workshops. Letters will be sent out regarding specific dates and times.
  • Students with a GPA less than 3.5 will be expected to attend tutoring/homework assistance at least once a week. Students with a 3.5 or above may choose to attend the homework or tutoring sessions, but are not required to do so.
  • During the summer program, students will check in on Sunday evenings and be picked up on Friday evenings.

If needed, we provide bus tokens for public transportation.

7) Will the summer program include other activities besides studying?
Will the summer program include other activities besides attending class and studying? Answer:  Absolutely!  Our program will include extra-curricular activities that may include:  outdoor recreation, indoor games, movies, attending concerts, plays to name a few.
8) I am already involved in CUB; can my friend or sibling apply too?
Yes, your friend or sibling may apply but they must meet requirements for admission.
9) Who pays for the program?
All hard costs for our program is 100% covered by our grant with the Department of Education.   Soft costs that parents may have to cover for example may be a new comforter, blanket or pillow, sheets for the dorms during the summer program if students do not have but is not required.
