Improvements on the After-Hours Phone Services with the Student Wellness Center

鶹ƽ, Kansas - On June 7, 2021, SGA Student Advocate, Jadie Chauncey, and SGA Director of Health and Wellness, David Liu, made a proposal to Student Health Services (SHS) and Counseling and Prevention Services (CAPS) for students to have quicker and efficient access to either COMCARE or a mental health hotline when calling the Student Wellness Center after-hours at 316-978-4792.

We recognize that for some, working up the courage to make an initial phone call can be difficult as is and want to improve the process to eliminate any unnecessary steps that may discourage students from seeking help when they need it most.

Recently, on July 3, Director for Student Health Services, Camille Childers, confirmed the improvement of this service by adding a function in the after-hours phone line that immediately directs students to COMCARE crisis services, which has mental health counselors available 24/7 to help students with a multitude of personal crises. Students will no longer be directed to call another number after making this first step to reach out, and instead will be able to simply press a number to be connected directly to the hotline.  Students will still be able to leave a message to schedule an appointment with CAPS or SHS and can also call the Lifeline directly at 1-800-273-8255.

The Student Government Association thanks our friends at SHS and CAPS for working with us to improve services beneficial to our students. In addition, we encourage students to take care of their mental health and use this phone service to their advantage. We are here to provide the help students may need to persevere through difficult times.

Dial: (316) 978-4792  to reach the Student Wellness Center.
