Ashlyn Riggs, a senior in 鶹ƽ State University’s online Teacher Apprentice Program™ (TAP), is not just working toward her Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Unified / Elementary Education—she’s already living her dream of becoming a teacher. Originally from Cheney, Kansas, Ashlyn benefits from WSU's forward-thinking TAP, which blends academic advancement with hands-on classroom experience, allowing her to apply what she learns in real time while earning her degree.
As the Lead Substitute Teacher at WSU’s Child Development Center (CDC), Ashlyn steps into the shoes of lead teachers when they’re absent, working with children ranging from birth to Pre-K. “I love being able to be part of a program that works around my work schedule so I can gain on-the-job experience while also taking classes at my own convenience,” she shares.
From a young age, Ashlyn knew she wanted to teach. She fondly recalls bribing her younger siblings to play “school,” where she would take on the role of their teacher. Her passion for education carried her through high school, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. Now, through her role at the CDC, Ashlyn is deepening her skills in classroom management, lesson planning, and leadership—essentials for any aspiring educator.
“The Teacher Apprentice Program has given me an incredible amount of experience so far,” Ashlyn says. “I’ve gained knowledge in the teaching profession, the skills needed to manage a classroom, and how to develop and implement lesson plans for various age groups.”
With plans to continue growing her career in education, Ashlyn is already making an impact through her dedication to her work and passion for helping young children thrive.
For Ashlyn, the journey to becoming a teacher is just beginning, and her hands-on experience at WSU is giving her the tools to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
鶹ƽ State's applied learning program gives students hands-on, paid experience with industry partners, helping them build careers before graduation.
