Below are 10 types of hazardous waste containers that are approved for use according to Federal and State guidelines. These are the only containers that should be used to store and transport hazardous waste. All of these containers can be obtained from the EHS office by submitting a Facilities Services work order.

Five gallon capacity, semi-transparent, with a gasketed 2 3/8 inch diameter screw
on lid. Commonly used for accumulating liquid hazardous wastes where the lid must
be removed and replaced to add wastes over a period of time.
Five gallon capacity, with an open top (11 3/8 inch diameter) and a removable, screw on lid with an o-ring seal. They are commonly used for accumulating solid hazardous wastes where the lid must be removed and replaced to add wastes over a period of time.
One gallon capacity jug with a 1 3/16 inch diameter screw on lid. Commonly used for accumulation of liquids.
Half gallon capacity jug with a 1 3/16 inch diameter screw on lid. Commonly used for accumulation of liquids.
Secondary containment tray. Approximate dimensions are 20 in. L x 15in. W x 7in. H.
Secondary containment tray. 20in. L x 15in. W x 5in. H
All of the above containers are made of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE).

6 gallon step can for accumulation of flammable solids.
30 gallon HDPE tight head drum. They are commonly used for accumulation of corrosive liquids.
55 gallon steel tight head drum. Commonly used for the accumulation of flammable and other non-corrosive liquids.
55 gallon steel open head drums. Used for the accumulation of non-corrosive solids or liquids. They are often used to contain absorbent materials used in the clean-up of spilled liquids.
