Congratulations to those who received grants in February! So far this fiscal year, WSU鈥檚 AA researchers proposed $55,523,251 in funding, were awarded $75,863,744, and generated $2,649,766 in indirect cost recovery.
As a sponsoring institution for Oakridge Associated Universities (ORAU), I represented WSU as its Councilor at the annual ORAU Council of Sponsoring Institutions meeting on March 4-5. The program was again stellar, and focused on Redefining the Next Generation STEM Enterprise; the presentation slides are available at . As posted in the Funding Opportunities section below, the FY2025 ORAU research and development areas have been defined as: Our Changing Planet, Our Behavioral Health, The Post-Pandemic World, and Implementing Innovative Technologies.
The Office of Research and the WSU Foundation & Alumni Engagement are pleased to co-host an Inaugural Industrial Sponsors Day on April 19, 2024. This is described in both the Education/Training and Announcement sections below, with links to the schedule and to RSVP for the two sessions and for lunch. Our goal for this first event is to promote industry-sponsored, faculty-led research by educating our communities on the opportunities made possible through such collaborations, and by providing current examples of how industry-faculty collaborations have been established. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will simultaneously host a Research Showcase representing all LAS departments, as well as interested departments from the other colleges, with an emphasis on research that is potentially of interest to industry. We look forward to your participation, especially in the roundtable discussions!
In our continued effort to introduce you to those who serve you in the Office of Research, please see the spotlight in the last section of this newsletter on Charity Lowe, who is a Research Grant Administrator on the Post-Award team.
We wish you much success in your research efforts over the next month.
Coleen Pugh, Vice Provost for Research

DARPA and ARPA-H Artificial Intelligence Cyber Challenge (AIxCC)
The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) is joining forces with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to expand the Artificial Intelligence Cyber Challenge (AIxCC). Cyber and ransomware attacks on America鈥檚 health care systems have increased significantly in recent years, often preventing patients from receiving care and compromising their personal information1. By collaborating with DARPA on the AIxCC, ARPA-H aims to spur the development of AI-enabled technology to safeguard hospitals, pharmacies, and medical devices from cyberattacks. AIxCC is a two-year competition that asks competitors to design novel AI tools and capabilities to find and fix vulnerabilities in software used in critical infrastructure. This software runs everything from transportation to water and wastewater systems, emergency services, and energy sources. At the center of this infrastructure are the health care and public health sectors uniquely sensitive to disruptions in these areas.
