Congratulations to those who received grants in December! Thanks to all of their talents and hard work, as of December 31, 2022, WSU researchers under Academic Affairs have submitted proposals budgeting a total of $44,492,602, received $23,992,544 in awards, and generated $1,996,162 in indirect cost recovery thus far for FY2023. However, the last number of IDC recovery will likely change after the new F&A rates have been finalized for an effective date of July 1, 2022, following negotiations with the federal government, as described below in an Announcement.
This month’s newsletter provides an opportunity to get to know a little about Shane Coelho in his role as Research Grant Administrator for Post-Award in the Office of Research in Academic Affairs.
We wish you much success in your research efforts over the next month.

*** LIMITED *** Funding Agency: National Science Foundation (NSF)Title: Application Deadline: ***Limited*** Because WSU may only submit one Research Partnership
Track proposal, Notices of Intent to apply must be sent to proposals@wichita.edu by February 28, 2023 at 12noon, in case an internal competition is needed. You will
be informed if you have been chosen to proceed by March 21, 2023. Applications to
the funder (if selected) will be due by May 2, 2023.Purpose: “The Research Partnerships
(PFI-RP) track seeks to achieve the same goals as the PFI-TT track by supporting instead
complex, multi-faceted technology development projects that are typically beyond the
scope of a single researcher or institution and require a multi-organizational, interdisciplinary,
synergistic collaboration. A PFI-RP project requires the creation of partnerships
between academic researchers and third-party organizations such as industry, non-academic
research organizations, federal laboratories, public or non-profit technology transfer
organizations or other universities. Such partnerships are needed to conduct use-inspired
research on a stand-alone larger project toward commercialization and societal impact.
In the absence of such synergistic partnership, the project’s likelihood for success
would be minimal. The intended outcomes of both PFI-TT and PFI-RP tracks are: a)
the commercialization of new intellectual property derived from NSF-funded research
outputs; b) the creation of new or broader collaborations with industry (including
increased corporate sponsored research); c) the licensing of NSF-funded research outputs
to third party corporations or to start-up companies funded by a PFI team; and d)
the training of future innovation and entrepreneurship leaders.” See below for the
PFI-TT track opportunity due May 2, 2023.Amount: Up to $1,000,000

Funding Agency: Simons FoundationTitle: Application Deadlines: Letters of Intent due March 8, 2023; If invited, full applications
due September 2023Purpose: “The Simons Foundation seeks to create strong collaborations
and foster the cross-pollination of ideas between investigators, as these interactions
often lead to unexpected breakthroughs. Towards this end, in 2012 the foundation launched
a new collaborative funding model, the Simons Collaborations, which funds groups of
investigators — often from different disciplines — to work together on a timely and
important problem. We now seek vision statements to identify new, emerging breakthrough
areas of neuroscience that are poised for high-impact funding by the Simons Foundation.
We are interested in bold and cutting edge, idea-generating research that focuses
on basic principles of brain function that may be overlooked or too risky for other
funding organizations. We will prioritize cross-disciplinary collaborations that
integrate many levels of analysis, methodologies, ways of thinking, and scientific
communities. We endeavor to encourage conversations within and across fields while
bringing together diverse groups of researchers to investigate important questions
about the basic principles of brain function.”Amount: $5,000,000-$12,000,000 per year
Funding Agency: National Science FoundationTitle: Application Deadlines: Mandatory Preliminary Proposals due March 8, 2023; If invited,
full applications due June 14, 2023Purpose: “The IUCRC program provides a structure
for academic researchers to conduct fundamental, pre-competitive research of shared
interest to industry and government organizations. These organizations pay membership
fees to a consortium so that they can collectively envision and fund research, with
at least 90% of Member funds allocated to the direct costs of these shared research
projects. IUCRCs are formed around research areas of strategic interest to U.S. industry.
Industry is defined very broadly to include companies (large and small), startups
and non-profit organizations. Principal Investigators form a Center around emerging
research topics of current research interest, in a pre-competitive space but with
clear pathways to applied research and commercial development. Industry partners join
at inception, as an existing Center grows or they inspire the creation of a new Center
by recruiting university partners to leverage NSF support. Government agencies participate
