Overview
A pediatric surgeon & researcher, Dr. Ross has served four medical schools as a campus executive or dean.
He is a graduate of Trinity College and the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, with postgraduate medical and research training at Duke University Medical Center, University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He earned a master's in administrative medicine from the University of Wisconsin- Madison and a master鈥檚 in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
He served as a faculty physician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; as the founding regional dean for the Western Clinical Campus of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine; and as dean of Chicago Medical School and vice president for medical affairs of Rosalind Franklin University.
He led the WVU School of Medicine for five years from 2010 - 2015. During his tenure
at WVU, the School expanded its faculty substantially; won a major, multi-year NIH
award to develop clinical and translational research; and fully restructured its faculty
practice and teaching hospital management. In 2015 the School received a full eight-year
reaccreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
Throughout 2016 Dr. Ross served as Interim Dean and Professor at Florida Atlantic
University鈥檚 Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. In that role, he helped the University
determine how to best position the College of Medicine for its next phase of growth
as well as led the successful search for the College鈥檚 next 鈥減ermanent鈥 Dean.
At the present time Dr. Ross is actively engaged as a consultant for medical schools,
academic health centers and large, highly integrated health systems. His consulting
work focuses upon: 1) Academic Health Center / Hospital / Hospital System affiliations,
mergers & acquisitions. 2) Medical school accreditation / reaccreditation and 3) Coaching
(Deans and SVPs of Academic Health Centers).
He is the author or co-author of almost 100 original articles and book chapters.
Dr. Ross has been selected as a leader of several national professional and accrediting organizations. He is a past chair of the Governing Council for the American Medical Association Section on Medical Schools, as well as a past chair of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). In 2015 he completed a term as an elected member of the AAMC's Administrative Board of the Council of Deans.
