To me, applied learning means taking what you've learned in the classroom and applying it to real-world situations. It's about bridging the gap between theory and practice, gaining experience and seeing how your knowledge can be used in a practical context.
When it comes to finding job opportunities, there are several avenues I explored. One effective way is to utilize online job search platforms like LinkedIn where you can find a wide range of job postings and connect with professionals in your field. Networking is also crucial - reach out to friends, family, professors and professionals in your desired industry to inquire about any opportunities they may be aware of.
That's how I was able to land my position as a development/volunteer committee intern at the International Rescue Committee where I help with fundraising and volunteer management. I also assist in organizing events, coordinating volunteer activities and supporting donor relations.
For students preparing for co-op/internships, here are some of my tips:
- Polish your resume: Tailor your resume to highlight relevant skills, experiences and accomplishments.
- Leverage LinkedIn: Connect with professionals and join relevant groups to expand your network.
- Research companies: Learn about the companies you're interested in and understand their values and goals.
- Gain relevant experience: Participate in student organizations, take on leadership roles, or pursue relevant projects to enhance your skills and make your resume stand out. I am involved in various student groups, even a sorority!
In terms of personal experience that helped me land an internship, being involved in student organizations and taking on leadership roles provided me with valuable experiences and skills that were attractive to employers. These activities allowed me to develop teamwork, communication, and organizational skills, which made a positive impression during interviews.
As I wrap up my last semester, my goal is to finish strong academically, make lasting memories with friends, and enjoy the remaining time in college.
After graduating, my goal is to secure a job in my desired field and continue to learn and grow professionally. I also aspire to make a positive impact in my chosen industry and contribute to meaningful projects that align with my passions and values.
