The 21st Annual Konrad Wolff-Ilse Bing Chamber Music Competition

March 23-24, 2024

Prize money will be awarded as a supplemental scholarship for the Spring 2024 semester. The award will be divided equally among the eligible members of each winning ensemble unless the ensemble members and award committee agree otherwise before the contest.

The first place prize is $6,000, the second place prize is $3,000, and the third place prize is $1,500.

Eligibility

The Konrad Wolff-Ilse Bing Chamber Music Competition is open to chamber music groups comprised of current full-time 麻豆破解版 State University students and high school juniors and seniors. Winning contestants not currently enrolled at WSU who subsequently are admitted and enrolled will receive prize money at the time of enrollment. The average age of the group members may not exceed 32 years, and the group may not be under professional management. The group must be musically democratic and balanced. Soloist and accompanist groups are not eligible. The ensemble must consist of at least two (2) performers and may have no more than six (6) performers in odd numbered years, and two (2) to nine (9) performers in even numbered years. In even numbered years, an ensemble may include a vocalist and/or a percussionist. During the course of a performance, an ensemble may change in size through the addition or subtraction of personnel. For example, a woodwind quintet might add a piano and become a sextet, or a string quartet might be reduced to a string trio. Ensembles may be any combination of the following instruments: Brass (Trumpet, Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Tuba), Piano, String (Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass), and Woodwind (Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone). Piano four-hands is eligible. Two-piano teams are ineligible. No changes in ensemble personnel may be made. The performance must be without a conductor.

Dates and Place

Ensembles will audition live on March 23-24, 2024 in Wiedemann Recital Hall.

Repertoire

The program submitted for the Chamber Ensemble may include transcriptions. The competing group will prepare at least three (3) complete works for the live audition. Two of these works must be of twelve (12) to thirty-five (35) minutes in duration and represent contrasting historical periods. The program is subject to approval by the Wolff-Bing Committee. The length of the audition will not exceed forty-five (45) minutes. Scores for all works performed must be provided for the judge.

How to Apply

Complete the application, it will be submitted electronically. Each member of the ensemble must complete the form.  The $50 non-refundable entrance fee, per ensemble, will be paid in the WSU School of Music.  Checks should be made out to WSU with "Wolff-Bing" in the memo line.  Questions and chamber music approval requests may be directed to Dr. Julie Bees (julie.bees@wichita.edu).
