Marketing is a contest for people's attention
Seth Godin
We do our best to win over prospective partners in the dating market.
We would like to attract employers’ attention in the job market.
We need to win over our friends, neighbors, colleagues, and managers' attention to
establish long-term relationships.
We want to attract book publishers’, venture capitalists’, coworkers,’ and academic
reviewers’ attention to our ideas.
Of course as you probably already thought, marketing also includes the contest of
beating out the competition to win buyers' favor in the marketplace.
Marketing is fundamental to what makes us human and involves all of the activities
that result in our enjoyment of life.
When it comes to organizations, marketing is a set of activities to win over stakeholders’
attention through creating, communicating, and delivering superior values to customers,
investors, partners, government, employees and society at large. Marketers work hard
to create campaigns that will reach the target audience to create and change their
mindsets.
Is marketing a science?
Yes
Though creativity plays a large role in marketing, there’s no denying data is what
drives results. Marketing as a science is about objectively using data to support
decision-making and looking for patterns in the market and customer behaviors — within
data. This is where data science is applied in the exploration of marketing data.
Marketing is a blend of art and science :)
Marketing is not solely about advertising and selling chocolates, clothes, cellphones,
and travel packages. It is the lifeblood of any organization. Without successful products
and services, accounting, finance, and human resource management would have nothing
to manage.
