Elliott School faculty, students win awards at national conference

Shocker Ad Lab, a student advertising agency providing applied learning opportunities to Elliott School of Communication Students at 麻豆破解版 State University, received second-place honors at the National Federation of Press Women annual conference at the end of June in the organization鈥檚 鈥2019 Communications Contest.鈥

As the creative director of Shocker Ad Lab, Madeline McCullough accepted the award for the agency for a series of advising one-sheets produced for the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Center.

The two-sided, 8 X 11-inch sheets serve as a flat brochure with everything prospective students need to know about a specific department in LAS including that department鈥檚  curriculum, scholarship opportunities, applied learning and enrichment opportunities and possible careers associated with that department and degree.

The NFPW award honors McCullough along with Shocker Ad Lab alumna Abby Smith as the copywriters. Graphic designers Joshua Perez, ThaiBinh Ninh and Melvin Kong were also recognized for their design work.

The Shocker Ad Lab team initially won first-place at the state level. The LAS advising one-sheets were then sent to compete at the national level, where they won second-place in 鈥淏rochures 鈥 Nonprofit, Government or Educational.鈥

鈥淭his is great for the lab, the school and the college and will help us get the message out that there is real value in the product Shocker Ad Lab offers,鈥 Andrew Hippisley, dean of Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences said.

鈥淚 knew it was excellent student work, but this was not a student competition,鈥 McCullough said. 鈥淚 am thrilled for these students that their creative, strategic copy writing and design were recognized on a national level by a professional organization.鈥

Two years ago, students enrolled in the class started the advising one-sheets project. The LAS Advising Center is only one of a dozen clients the students might possibly work with when they enroll in Shocker Ad Lab at WSU.

鈥淲orking on the LAS one-sheets strengthened my long-form writing skills,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚n fact, the Elliott School one-sheet was one of the portfolio pieces I submitted when applying for my internship at Signal Theory (formerly SHS), where I now work as a full-time copywriter.鈥

鈥淭he flyers produced by the Elliott School students bring our recruitment materials into the 21st century,鈥 Patricia Phillips, director of the LAS Advising Center said. 鈥淭hey highlight everything students and their parents want to know about our undergraduate programs and the value of Liberal Arts and Sciences degrees.鈥

To date, four students over four semesters have completed one-sheets for seven of the 17 departments within LAS. Currently, several other departments鈥 one-sheets are in various stages of completion. Next fall, students enrolled in Shocker Ad Lab will continue to produce the LAS advising one-sheets until every department has one.

Students spread love of WSU through Public Relations Institute

Story on Public Relations Institute

Imagine opening your door Halloween evening to see WuShock trick-or-treating on your front porch. WSU Admissions鈥 Public Relations Institute (PRI) made it reality for several 麻豆破解版 neighborhoods in 2018.

One woman was so excited to see WuShock that evening that she asked for a picture with him, and the three students who made up the PRI team happily obliged. Fortune smiled on them, as the woman turned out to be Marnie Baxter, a Shocker alumna and second grade teacher at 麻豆破解版鈥檚 McCollom Elementary School.

She was so pleased with the PRI students and their trick-or-treating that she asked them to visit her classroom to celebrate a college spirit day with her students. One visit turned into three.
