New partnerships ease Butler students' transition to WSU

WSU and Butler articulation agreement

鶹ƽ State and Butler Community College joined together to sign 17 articulation agreements that will provide a seamless transfer for Butler students wanting to earn their bachelor's degree at WSU.

“We are the number one transfer destination for all students in the state of Kansas – eight years running – and our biggest transfer partner is Butler,” said Richard Muma, WSU provost and acting president.

Annual training on budgeting system coming April 29-May 3

Budget office

The time for submission of FY 2020 annual budget requests is fast approaching.  If you are a Budget Officer or Review Officer, annual training on the budgeting system and process is required and will be held Monday, April 29 to Friday, May 3.

Sign-up for the training sessions by going to myWSU and enrolling through the myTraining link for the sessions titled “Fiscal Year Budget and TM1 Information.” We will also hold two open labs on Wednesday, May 8 and 15 to provide more targeted one-on-one training for those who may need additional assistance after attending one of the initial training sessions.

Revised: April 1, 2019 | Effective: May 15, 1998

Added language in regards to the university’s official mailing address. The university has assigned street addresses to buildings for way-finding and emergency purposes which cannot be used for mail service. The USPS will not deliver to a business address unless there is a cluster mailbox or mailroom. In order for university mail to reach our mailroom, departments must use the official address of 1845 Fairmount, plus the Zip+4, as stated in the requested revision. Recommended by Ellen Abbey and Michael Sperlazza in consultation with the United States Postal Service.


Judges needed to volunteer for GRASP symposium poster session

The Graduate School is seeking faculty and staff volunteers to judge during the poster session for the 2019 Graduate Research and Scholarly Projects (GRASP) symposium from 10 a.m.-noon Friday, April 26, in the RSC. We are counting on your volunteer services this year. Plus, it is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the diverse research and scholarly projects in which graduate students across campus have been engaged.

In search of ways to save money and generate revenue for university budget

The President's Budget Advisory Committee is looking to gather money-saving and revenue-generating ideas that can positively impact the university's budget. Ideas collected from the form will be assessed by the committee, and the most promising will be publicly posted on a WSU Idea Generator blog to seek campus comment and gauge interest. Psychology Department Colloquium to feature criminology professor

Remi Boivin, associate professor, School of Criminology, Universite de Montreal, and researcher at the International Centre for Comparative Criminology, will be the guest speaker at a Psychology Department Colloquium from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in 266 RSC. His talk is titled “The body-worn camera perspective bias: An application of psychology to the criminal justice system.”

His work on police use of force and body-worn cameras has been published, in “Police Quarterly,” “Policing and the Journal of Experimental Criminology,” and other related journals. He often works with police organizations in Quebec, Canada and currently leads research collaborations on body-worn cameras with the National Police Academy.

Graduate School Professional Development Series offers the art of communication in professional life

The Art of Communication April 10, 2019

“The Art of Communication in Professional Life: Your Competitive Edge” will be presented from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in 142 RSC. The presenter will be Ray Hull from the College of Health Professions. All are welcome; lunch RSVP to jenny.stauffer@wichita.edu.

To demonstrate excellence as professionals, we must also develop excellence as communicators. Effective communication involves a delicate balance between a nurturing and caring communicative style, and the assurance that one is working with a well-prepared professional.

This presentation will give those in attendance insights into the art of communication, the art of non-verbal communication, and the art of communication in conflict resolution.


Acting on depression project at 鶹ƽ State

Depression is one the most common and debilitating of all mental health conditions. Nearly 20 percent of us will experience depression at some point during our lifetime, and within this year it is projected by the World Health Organization to become the second leading cause of disability worldwide. 

A project is currently underway in the Department of Psychology at 鶹ƽ State University to investigate different variations of behavioral activation in helping individuals better manage and cope with depression. This program, conducted by Yvonne Chaw, a doctoral student in clinical psychology, under the supervision of Robert Zettle, director of Clinical Training, seeks volunteer participants who are currently experiencing at least a moderate level of depression.

Those interested in participating in the project will first be asked to complete a brief, online screening survey. Interested individuals 18 or older experiencing a least a moderate level of depression can access the brief .

Comparisons with other psychological approaches, as well as medication, has identified behavioral activation as one of the more effective means of coping with depression. As its name suggests, behavioral activation stresses the importance of systematically re-engaging in a range of activities that are often abandoned in the face of depression.

Those interested in participating in the project will first be asked to complete a brief, online screening survey that assesses their level of depression and obtains some relevant background information. Those who qualify will be contacted with additional information and details about further participating in the treatment phase of this project which consists of eight weekly, individual sessions following some further assessment.

Our hope is that participants will learn some new strategies for more effectively coping with depression and that the overall findings from this project may also help improve psychological services offered to others who also struggle with it.

Interested individuals 18 or older experiencing a least a moderate level of depression can access the brief .

ACT Prep Workshop to be held at 鶹ƽ State

鶹ƽ State University's Counseling and Testing Center is offering a workshop to help high school students prepare to take the ACT from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 4. The workshop will provide general test-taking tips and information for all four subjects of the ACT exam – English, Math, Reading and Science.
