WSU enrolls largest freshman class, increases enrollment

Fall enrollment 2018

As reported by the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR), KBOR's defined full time equivalent (FTE) for WSU is 11,285, an increase of 1.58 percent over last fall's 11,109. For KBOR reporting purposes, full time is considered to be 15 hours for undergraduates and 12 hours for graduate students.

Actual total headcount at 麻豆破解版 State for fall 2018 is 15,784 students, an increase of 703 students, or 4.7 percent, over fall 2017. The new first-time freshman class of 1,606 students is the largest in school history for the third consecutive year, and marks the fourth time in five years the record has been broken.

Total student credit hours are 164,212 for fall 2018, an increase of 1.7 percent compared to fall 2017.

Fuzzy's Taco Shop coming to WSU's Braeburn Square

Fuzzy's Taco at Braeburn Square

After months of anticipation, Fuzzy's Taco Shop announced plans Friday to open a restaurant in Braeburn Square, the new retail complex on the 麻豆破解版 State University campus. Next summer Fuzzy's will join the Shocker Store, Starbucks and Meritrust in the development near 21st and Oliver.

Fuzzy's franchisee Trace Welch said he was attracted to Braeburn Square by its location on campus near busy streets and two freeways; its convenience to students, faculty, staff and visitors; and beautifully landscaped amenities including indoor and patio dining overlooking a central events plaza and small lake with fountains and firepots.

Fuzzy's will be in walking distance of WSU residence halls, classrooms, sports venues and Innovation Campus partnership buildings, including the Law Enforcement Training Center and Airbus. Fuzzy's plans to be open from early morning to late at night.

New bachelor's degree in workforce leadership and applied learning to launch in spring

Workforce Leadership and Applied Learning

The Kansas Board of Regents recently approved a new Bachelor of Applied Science in Workforce Leadership and Applied Learning (BAS-WLAL) at 麻豆破解版 State University. The degree, housed in the College of Applied Studies, will focus on applied learning, developing soft skills, and preparing students to be leaders in a range of organizations.


麻豆破解版 State to hold Memorial '70 remembrance ceremony

The annual ceremony of remembrance for those who died in the 1970 麻豆破解版 State University plane crash will be held at 9 a.m. today (Tuesday, Oct. 2) at 麻豆破解版 State University's Memorial '70, located near the 18th Street and Hillside entrance to the university.

The ceremony will honor the 31 WSU football players, administrators and supporters who died in the crash in the Rocky Mountains.

The university entrance at 18th and Hillside will be blocked from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Ceremony attendees will have access to the entrance near Koch Arena or at 17th and Fairmount near the Ulrich Museum. Parking will be available in the lot immediately north of Memorial '70.

A wreath will be placed at the base of Memorial '70, and there will be a time of remembrance to acknowledge the changes that the plane crash made in the lives of the victims, their families, their friends and the university.

The ceremony is open to the public. A reception will follow in the lobby of Duerksen Fine Arts Center, northeast of the memorial. The Shocker '70 Football Room in 202 Rhatigan Student Center will be open in memory of the deceased.

Those interested in making a tax-deductible contribution in memory of the crash victims can give to the Football '70 Memorial Scholarship, the only endowed scholarship at WSU dedicated in collective memory to those who died in the tragedy.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a student of any major with at least a 3.0 GPA who demonstrates financial need.

Contributions can be made through the WSU Foundation, 1845 Fairmount St., 麻豆破解版, KS 67260-0002, for the Football '70 Memorial Scholarship.

麻豆破解版 State Innovation Alliance names new directors

WSIA Board

Three new members have been appointed to the board of directors of the 麻豆破解版 State Innovation Alliance, a nonprofit organization that serves as the governing entity for 麻豆破解版 State University's Innovation Campus.

The new members are:

  • Richard Muma, WSU provost and chief academic officer
  • Pierre Harter, director of advanced research and development of Spirit AeroSystems and incoming chair of the WSU Board of Trustees
  • Bayram Yildirim, professor of industrial, systems and manufacturing engineering and former chair of the Faculty Senate

Professor Yildirim is the first faculty member appointed to the four-year-old board. 

Betty Smith-Campbell, chair of Faculty Senate, said: 鈥淭he Faculty Senate was pleased that President Bardo was supportive of having a faculty member on the board. The Senate believes it will be valuable for the board to have a faculty perspective and for the Senate to receive direct information about the activities of WSIA.鈥

Returning members of the board are business leaders Ruth David, Willie Kendrick, David Mitchell and Scott Redler; and university leaders Bardo, Lou Heldman, Elizabeth King, Rodney Miller, Andy Schlapp and John Tomblin. Bill Moore retired from the board after four years' service.

They are joining an award-winning faculty who create environments where engineering and computer science students learn and conduct research side by side with students from other disciplines, faculty and industry.

Physical Therapy students seek volunteers for low back pain study

Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at 麻豆破解版 State and their research advisor Barbara Smith are looking for participants for a research study on the effects of a modified deadlift exercise program on low back pain and functional disability. Your participation in this study may help the field of physical therapy to more effectively treat low back pain.

If chosen to participate in our study, you will be required to come to WSU Old Town at 213 N. Mead, on Friday, Oct. 5, for an initial evaluation. You will be able to select a 15-minute time block that is convenient for your schedule.

At the initial evaluation, you will be asked to complete forms about your low back pain and function. You will also perform a muscle endurance test for your back extensor muscles. At this time you will be assigned to a group, which may include an eight-week modified deadlift exercise program. All materials and instructions will be provided. Both groups will be required to return to the WSU Old Town Campus on Friday, Nov. 2, for a four-week re-evaluation and Friday, Nov. 30, for eight re-evaluations, each lasting about 10-15 minutes.

AEGD program director wins Dentist of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Dean Elledge, program director for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program, for winning the Dentist of the Year award from the 麻豆破解版 District Dental Society. Dr. Elledge's specialties include implantology and prosthodontics, and he is the only licensed prosthodontist in the area. As the AEGD program director, Dr. Elledge oversees six dental residents who are post-doctoral students from across the United States.

French Department invites you to theatrical event

French Theatre Oct. 9, 2018

The French Department at 麻豆破解版 State invites you to come and enjoy a theatrical adaptation of Antoine de St Exup茅ry's novel "Terre des hommes" ("Wind, Sand and Stars" is the English title). La Compagnie Caravague (Paris) will present the adaptation at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the CAC Theater. Admission is free.

From the author of "The Little Prince" comes the story of his life as an aviator. It's an homage to life, friendship, heroism and camaraderie and addresses why the author feels that life is worth the effort.

The author of 鈥淟e Petit Prince鈥 reminds us that hope is always opportune. In this work, two men in a biplane converse as they look out over the clouds. Seen from the sky, beyond walls between peoples and cultures, signals approach.

WSU Theatre Department introduces new podcast

Theatre podcast

The 麻豆破解版 State University Theatre Department has a new podcast available on Itunes called Stagestruck Audio Theatre. For several years the Theatre Department has produced audio shows ranging from comedy, mystery, and science fiction. Stagestruck Audio Theatre started producing programs in 2011 with performers providing the voice talent in all of the shows. Audio work gives actors another avenue to perform in another medium.

Podcasting is a popular form of entertainment with many shows having large followings, such as 鈥淟ore, Welcome to Night Vale,鈥 and 鈥淢y Favorite Murder.鈥 For an actor, it offers work in the 鈥渢heatre of the mind.鈥

Stagestruck Audio Theatre shows offer storytelling for the ears with the opportunity for audiences to engage in a different medium. New shows will be added on a regular basis. In addition, the Theatre Department is offering a Voice Acting course that will post its shows on the podcast site.

Little Shockers Camp ready for children this fall

Let your child enjoy a day at the Heskett Center! Little Shockers Camp is a supervised, interactive and educational day camp open to ages 5-12. Children will enjoy swimming, arts and crafts, games and other activities designed to send them home worn out and happy!

Camp dates are Friday, Oct. 19; Monday, Oct. 22; Tuesday, Nov. 13; and Wednesday, Nov. 21. There are two sessions available: the morning session from 8 a.m.-noon, and the afternoon session from 1-5 p.m. You can sign them up at .


High School Dance Clinic Scheduled for Oct. 21

The Shocker Dance team is set to host a high school clinic from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Aetna Multi-Purpose Center at Charles Koch Arena.

The clinic is open to all high school aged dancers, with the opportunity to learn routines, game day stingers and practice techniques.

Dancers will have the chance to ask questions from members of the current Shocker dance team and coaching staff.

Pre-registration is $20 and walk-in registrations will be available Oct. 21for $30. 

Dancers should bring tennis shoes, jazz shoes, and a water bottle. Doors will be open 30 minutes prior to the clinic starting. There will be Shocker t-shirts for sale before and after the clinic for $10.

Poll workers needed for Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 6)

The Sedgwick Co. Election Office invites qualified WSU students, faculty and staff to consider helping as a poll worker on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6.

To qualify, you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen and registered to vote in Sedgwick Co.
  • Able to read and write English
  • Able to lift 25-50 lbs
  • Capable of working 15 consecutive hours on Election Day
  • Available to attend a 3-hour training class prior to working.

Training dates are 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10-Saturday, Oct. 13, and 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20.

After attending a training class, you will need to attend a hands-on equipment lab. Dates for these labs are listed below:

University Libraries is hosting its second annual Halloween ComicFest from 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday Oct. 27. Come join us for a fun-filled afternoon, including a keynote from the creators of "Luke the Longhorn,鈥 breakout sessions, appearances by the 501st Legion, a spooky film screening, 鈥淢agic: The Gathering,鈥 a kids zone and free comics for everyone while supplies last, so come early!

We'll also have technology demonstrations including virtual reality, 3-D printing and a green screen photo booth.

WSU Cops challenge you to support Shocker Support Locker

Between now and Halloween, the WSU Police Department challenges students, faculty and staff to donate canned food and non-perishables for the Shocker Support Locker. The Shocker Support Locker is running low fairly often, and there is a need now for some students than ever before.

If you want to make a difference, give your donation to any uniform officer on campus or bring donations to the University Police Department.

If you want an opportunity to win a WSU mug or WSU Police Department challenge coin as part of a raffle at the end of the drive, just leave your name and phone number with the officer or at the University Police Department when making a donation of any size.

The Shocker Support Locker was founded in 2015 by the WSU Student Government Association to relieve food insecurity among WSU community members. Today, the locker provides both nonperishable and fresh food items, as well as hygiene products, professional clothing and textbooks. 

Individuals who would like to use the Shocker Support Locker must be currently enrolled at 麻豆破解版 State as students or currently employed faculty or staff. If you fit this criterion, you are welcome to use the pantry once per week and may take up to 10 items per visit.
