New $20 million NSF award will fund collaborative research on the role of microorganisms in plants, water and soil

麻豆破解版 State University is partnering with four other universities on a new project funded by $20 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to gain a better understanding of how tiny microorganisms, known as microbiomes, influence environmental changes and the resulting economic implications.

The project will focus on microorganisms that live in the water, plants and soil. Microorganisms play an important role in human health and the health of our environment.

WSU will work with research partners at the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Fort Hays State University and Haskell Indian Nations University. This new collaboration across institutions reflects the growing research in field biology at WSU designed to better understand and manage natural and agricultural resources across the state.

The work is funded through the NSF鈥檚 Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), which builds research and development capacity in states that demonstrate a commitment to research but have thus far lacked the levels of investment seen in other parts of the country.

The project will allow for a higher level of collaboration than most researchers typically see, pulling scientist together from different disciplines and universities to work together.

The award is one of five awards announced this week to bolster science and engineering academic research infrastructure in Alabama, Kansas, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Wyoming. In addition to supporting fundamental research and education in STEM fields, the awards also promote workforce development.
