WSU awards two $60,000 Gore Scholarships to Kansas students

Two Kansas high school seniors have won 麻豆破解版 State鈥檚 Harry Gore Memorial Scholarships.

The winners are Matthew Miller of Leawood and Maribel Sanchez of Dodge City.

They will each receive $15,000 a year for four years, a total of $60,000.

More than 500 high school seniors participated in the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational (DSI) 鈥 the largest competition in DSI history. There were 11 finalists selected before Miller and Sanchez were chosen as the winners.

The scholarships, awarded annually at WSU, recognize leadership and academic skills and are two of the largest undergraduate scholarships in Kansas.

Matthew Miller

Miller is a senior at Blue Valley North High School. He鈥檚 interested in studying secondary education with an emphasis in chemistry.

He鈥檚 an Eagle Scout with Boy Scouts of America and has built homes for local families through mission trips to Mexico and Jamaica.

Millers has served as a student leader in various high school fine arts activities, including choir and the school musical.

鈥淢att is a student who shows great tenacity and initiative,鈥 says his choir director, Jason Sickel. 鈥淗e has a collaborative personality that allows others to feel like they can offer suggestions, opinions and reflections. He would be a wonderful asset to the WSU community.鈥

Maribel Sanchez

Sanchez is a senior at Dodge City High School and is interested in studying accounting at WSU.

She is president of her school鈥檚 student council and her senior class and was elected ambassador for her high school chapter of the National Society of High School Scholars and for Youth Entrepreneurs.

Sanchez is treasurer of Future Business Leaders of America and has volunteered with the Special Olympics.

鈥淚 believe that much of Maribel鈥檚 success can be attributed to her mindset. Maribel is always searching to learn and grow from everything,鈥 says teacher Jonathan Hansen. 鈥淪he sees the sky as the limit because even in success, she feels that she can always do better. Maribel is a refreshing leader, and 麻豆破解版 State will be better with her on campus.鈥
