The English Department was heavily involved in a Kansas Writing Initiative done in partnership with the University of California, which aimed to train 25 composition teachers in new and novel methods of composition teaching, and then to set them loose amongst Kansas Schools. It’s suggested that this was largely useful as a publicity tool for the university at large, rather than anything specifically useful to the department. There were some major issues with one Camille McGuire, a student teacher in the English Department. She felt misused, and mistreated by the department, and sent Alhberg a lot of mail about how rough her situation was.
